RESUMEN

This study investigates the optimal placement of locking plate screws for bone fracture stabilization in the humerus, a crucial factor for enhancing healing outcomes and patient comfort. Utilizing Finite Element Method (FEM) modeling, the research aimed to determine the most effective screw configuration for achieving optimal stress distribution in the humerus bone. A computer tomography (CT) scan of the humerus was performed, and the resulting images were used to create a detailed model in SOLIDWORKS 2012. This model was then analyzed using ANSYS Workbench V13 to develop a finite element model of the bone. Four different screw configurations were examined: 4 × 0°, 4 × 10°, 4 × 20°, 2 × 20°; 2 × 0°. These configurations were subjected to bending in the XZ and YZ planes, as well as tension and compression along the Z axis. The research identified the 2 × 20°+2 × 0° configuration as the most beneficial, with average stress values below 30 MPa and peak stress values below 50 MPa in 3-point bending at the first screw. This configuration consistently showed the lowest stress values across all loading scenarios. Specifically, stress levels ranged from 20 MPa to 50 MPa for bending in the XZ plane, 20 MPa-35 MPa for bending in the YZ plane, 20 MPa-30 MPa for extension in the Z-axis, and 18 MPa-25 MPa for compression in the Z-axis. The 4 × 10° and 4 × 20° configurations also produced satisfactory results, with stress levels not exceeding 70 MPa. However, the 4 × 0° configuration presented considerable stress during bending and compression in the Z-axis, with stress values exceeding 100 MPa, potentially leading to mechanical damage. In conclusion, the 2 × 20°; 2 × 0° screw configuration was identified as the most effective in minimizing stress on the treated bone. Future work will involve a more detailed analysis of this methodology and its potential integration into clinical practice, with a focus on enhancing patient outcomes in bone fracture treatment.

The aim of this paper is to compare two methods of epoxy adhesive bond gap control: one with a geometrical (mechanical) solution and the other with glass beads, which have the diameter of the desired bond gap and are mixed with an epoxy adhesive. The adhered materials were carbon fiber composite tubes and aluminum alloy inserts, which were used as wishbones in a suspension system of a motorsport vehicle. It was assumed that the gap thickness would be equal to 0.2 mm and the length of a bond would be 30 mm. The internal diameter of the tubes was 14 mm and 18 mm, whereas the inserts' external diameter was 13.6 mm and 17.6 mm. Their surface has been subjected to mechanical treatment with sand paper starting from 240 grit up to 400. The adhesives used were EA 3425 and EA 9466 cured at 80 °C for 2 h. The results showed that the glass beads method provides more consistent and better results as compared to the geometrical (mechanical) method. Further study in the area of fatigue and interfacial failure modes could be useful.

A novel plastic scintillator is developed for the application in the digital positron emission tomography (PET). The novelty of the concept lies in application of the 2-(4-styrylphenyl)benzoxazole as a wavelength shifter. The substance has not been used as scintillator dopant before. A dopant shifts the scintillation spectrum towards longer wavelengths making it more suitable for applications in scintillators of long strips geometry and light detection with digital silicon photomultipliers. These features open perspectives for the construction of the cost-effective and MRI-compatible PET scanner with the large field of view. In this article we present the synthesis method and characterize performance of the elaborated scintillator by determining its light emission spectrum, light emission efficiency, rising and decay time of the scintillation pulses and resulting timing resolution when applied in the positron emission tomography. The optimal concentration of the novel wavelength shifter was established by maximizing the light output and it was found to be 0.05 ‰ for cuboidal scintillator with dimensions of 14 mm x 14 mm x 20 mm.

Despite being a plant by-product, chokeberry pomace is believed to exert some therapeutic effects because it is one of the richest sources of highly bioavailable non-enzymatic antioxidants. The aim of this study was to determine the functionality of bioactive compounds present in the Aronia melanocarpa pomace (chokeberry) based on enzymatic and non-enzymatic parameters related to the active defence of liver and blood against the effects of oxidative stress. The experiment was conducted with 48 lambs of two breeds-Polish Merino and Wrzosówka. Experimental groups were administered the basic feed with the addition of 150 g or 300 g of black chokeberry pomace per each kg of the complete feed. The activities of antioxidative enzymes (superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase), peptides (glutathione, glutathione disulfide), and a lipid peroxidation indicator (malondialdehyde), as well as the capacity of non-enzymatic antioxidants were investigated. The results proved a strong effect of bioactive compounds contained in the black chokeberry pomace on the estimated parameters. The inclusion of chokeberry pomace in feed mixtures brought many benefits linked with the antioxidative protection. Parameters responsible for the oxidative status were significantly modified despite the commonly-held view about a limited possibility of transferring phenolic compounds to the organs.
